Do you outline them? A: Every novel (or series) is different. My Bennet Sisters YA series is obviously based on my love of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. I’m currently working on a YA series about a high school for psychics, and the series heroine is a girl who lives for sports. In fact, in almost all of my novels, SOMEONE is an athlete of some kind, often but not always the heroine. I’m a seat-of-the-pants writer and don’t do anything resembling an outline or even character sketches. When I start a new book, I usually know the title of the book, the names of the main two (or more) characters, and (hopefully!) the basic conflict that propels the story. A: My upcoming second album is my biggest adventure at the moment. I took a spur-of-the-moment trip to Mexico in late February 2025, I knocked off a bucket-list item in June by seeing a show at Red Rocks in Colorado, and I’ll be hitting Paris and London in late September. I had just started swordfighting before COVID hit, and I hope to try that again, along with boxing, but a major scooter crash in late 2022 still affects what I can do with my right arm. (Being able to play guitar again was my main goal after the crash.) I’m doing French, Norwegian, Italian, and Spanish on Duolingo. (I’m mostly fluent in Spanish and am REALLY good at ordering crêpes and wine in French.) I wanted to be king. Instead, I became a lawyer. And the truth is, I loved it for a long time. Mergers and acquisitions, tax-free deals, securities, and a lot of other things that would make a normal person’s head spin made me happy. But then I discovered writing – and that made me happier. My very first manuscript, which eventually became my first published novel, Cooper’s Folly, won Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart award. I live on a lake in Minneapolis with my husband, bedrooms for two cute kidlets who are now in their 20s and living elsewhere but forever my kidlets, and a stuffed monkey named Philip. When not writing books or songs, I live for guitar, live music, travel, fruity cocktails (in moderation!), playing sports with reckless abandon, and ill-advised adventures that offer a high probability of injury to myself and others. If I have any vices – and I totally deny it – they might include (in no particular order) rock bands, dancing, triple-berry scones, my adorable little convertible, too much time spent at Five Guys and Punch Pizza, and (currently) Chris Hemsworth.
